Japan's Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida says the country will sign a UN joint statement calling for a ban on the use of nuclear weapons.
New Zealand, Switzerland and 14 other countries are leading efforts at a meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly in New York to release the statement possibly late next week.
Kishida told reporters on Friday about the Japanese government's decision to sign the statement.
He said that as the only country to have suffered atomic bombings, Japan knows the misery caused by nuclear weapons.
